Archie Vaughan Joins Rocky Flintoff for England U-19 Test Debut
The England Cricket Board has named a 14-member squad for the upcoming U-19 Test series against Sri Lanka that includes several family connections with former cricketers including Archie Vaughan, Rocky Flintoff, Farhan Ahmed, and Jaydn Denly.
The right-handed batter Archie Vaughan signed his first professional contract with Somerset earlier this season and has been part of the County’s Academy set up at Taunton since 2009.
With yet to make his debut for Somerset, he made his significant mark at an age-group level last week, where he scored 85 runs from 83 balls for a Young Lion Invitational Xl in a warm-up match against the England U19 ODI squad while Flint-off scored with 106.
Vaughan and Flintoff Seniors have played 48 tests together between 1999 and 2008, and now their sons are set to begin their own partnership at age group two in the tests series starting on July 08 at Wormsley.
Hamza Shaikh will be captaining the side featured in the Youth tests against Australia last year and is set to play against West Indies in a warmup test game at Beckenham this week.
“They’ve helped me and given me more confidence in my leadership on and off the field, advising on bowling options and field placements,” Shaikh said. “I like to think I’m fairly calm, and captaincy doesn’t faze me. I’m looking forward to the challenge and hopefully coming away with a series win.”
the team will also feature several players like Kesh Fonseka, Noah Thain, and Freddie McCann who played in the Sri Lanka U-19 tour of England.
