James Anderson has created a rare feat of bowling 40,000 deliveries in test cricket history during the final test match of his international career, the 1st Test match between England and West Indies at Lord’s.
James Anderson Becomes First Pacer to bowl 40,000 Deliveries in Test
England pacer James Anderson set a massive world record by becoming the first pacer and fourth bowler to achieve this remarkable feat on July 11 at Lord’s. He has played 188 Test matches for England.
Playing in the final test match of his legendary career, Anderson is set to retire from his international career as England register a huge win. By the end of day 02, the West Indies have lost six wickets in their second innings scoring only 76 runs, and trails England by 171 runs.
Anderson picked only one wicket during the first innings as Gus Atkinson picked a seven-wicket haul. Gus Atkinson’s 7 wickets for 45 runs was the 11th-best figure in an innings by a Test debutant and the second-best from an England player behind Dominic Cork, who took 7 wickets for 43 in 1995, also against West Indies.
Atkinson also becomes the fifth England bowler to bag a five-wicket haul on debut under Ben Stokes’ captaincy. Josh Tongue, Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed, and Tom Hartley are the four players to achieve this feat before Atkinson.
But, the 41-year-old was back to form in the second innings picking two wickets in 10 overs conceding only 11 runs. He dismissed West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and Jason Holder.
He became the first pacer in Test cricket’s 147-year-old history to bowl 40,000 balls in the longest format and became the fourth bowler to achieve the feat after Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble, and Shane Warne. Anderson is among the three pacers to bowl more than 30,000 balls in Test cricket history.
- Muttiah Muralitharan – 44039 (133 Tests)
- Anil Kumble – 40850 (132 Tests)
- Shane Warne – 40705 (145 Tests)
- James Anderson – 40001 (188* Tests)
- Stuart Broad – 33698 (167 Tests)
