Mainz vs Monchengladbach highlights
In a mid-table Bundesliga clash, ninth-placed Mainz won against eighth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach with 4-0 goal difference at the Mewa Arena in the Bundesliga on Friday .
The hosts made it two wins in a row last Sunday as they recorded a hard-fought 3-2 away win over Bayer Leverkusen. They have 29 points to their name from 21 games and are trailing the visitors on goal difference alone.
Borussia Monchengladbach returned to winning ways after two games as they defeated league leaders Bayern Munich 3-2 at home. Dayot Upamecano was sent off in the eighth minute, which helped Monchengladbach’s cause. Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann, and Marcus Thuram were on the scoresheet as Monchengladbach moved into the upper half of the league table.
Mainz made it back-to-back victories by downing Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 last time out, to place them ninth and nine points back from the European spots with 13 games to go.
With the team scoring six times in those successive matches, Ajorque will be hoping it’s his time to find the back of the net at the seventh attempt, but the forward will know he’s already under pressure to deliver after watching his replacement, Marcus Ingvartsen, convert the winner from the penalty spot on Matchday 21.
Regular No.1 Robin Zentner is also pushing for a place in the starting XI, but it’s yet to be seen whether head coach Bo Svensson is ready to replace Finn Dahmen between the sticks following a run of six games in the side (W3, D1, L2). Club captain Silvan Widmer and Dominik Kohr both returned after injuries last time out, and are in line to start.
Gladbach served up a memorable victory over Bayern Munich last weekend, continuing their record as the defending German champions’ bogey team. Lars Stindl and Jonas Hofmann got Gladbach up and running, before Thuram stepped off the bench to add their third – and his first of the year – in a 3-2 win.
The France international is expected to come back into the starting line-up for the trip to Mainz, a move that could see Alassane Plea drop out to the left after leading the attack on Matchday 21. Injury to Julian Weigl was one frustration from beating Bayern so Manu Kone and Christoph Kramer should continue in the centre of midfield.
Joe Scally could come in at right-back after watching from the bench previously, while Luca Netz – who was pictured back in training this week – may feature in some capacity after injury.
