Wolfsburg vs Frankfurt Highlights
The Wolves started strongly as they endeavoured to move to within two points of sixth-placed Frankfurt, aggressively getting forward in the early stages. Their bold approach paid off when Yannick Gerhardt played through Omar Marmoush, who rounded Kevin Trapp to open the scoring on 10 minutes.
Undeterred, Frankfurt soon flexed their considerable attacking muscles and were level midway through the half when Kolo Muani started and finished a move, heading in at the back post from Aurelio Buta’s laser-guided cross.
The Eagles took the lead a short while later when Evan Ndicka lashed in from the edge of the box after Wolfsburg failed to clear another attack. The hosts had chances to restore parity, with Marmoush seeing his chip over Trapp cleared off the line by Tuta before Gerhardt’s volley was blocked by the Frankfurt stopper.
Gerhardt did manage to equalise just before the interval, though, expertly guiding a header in from Patrick Wimmer’s free-kick.
The second period was initially a more cagey affair by the standards of the first half and it was a good 10 minutes before either side had an effort at goal, Daichi Kamada flashing a drive wide of the target.
Gerhardt had an opportunity to add to the scoreline at the opposite end of the pitch when he found himself with just Trapp to beat but his attempted dink over the goalkeeper was saved. Frankfurt did have the ball in the net again following fine work from Kolo Muani, who cut the ball back for Jesper Lindstrom, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Ndicka almost snatched a win in the closing stages after Koen Casteels fumbled a high cross into the box but his shot cannoned off the outside the post, leaving each side with a share of the spoils.
Niko Kovac’s side were happy to soak up possession and territory from the hosts for long periods of the match, with Koln having 58% possession, 13 shots and 10 corners compared to Wolfsburg’s 42%, six and two respectively in those particular statistical measures.
However, it is putting the ball in the back of the net that is the most important part of football, and the Wolves have been consistently good in that regard since becoming fully integrated within Kovac’s system.
Indeed, they have scored two or more goals in 11 of their last 15 league games, with their win at Koln suggesting their consecutive blanks against Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig in recent weeks were little more than a blip.
Frankfurt Journey on the League
Frankfurt, meanwhile, continued their up-and-down form from recent weeks with a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Champions League qualification rivals Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena last time out.
Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg had provided Die Roten Bullen with a 2-0 lead to protect after the break, with Djibril Sow pulling one back after the hour mark. However, Die Adler could not find a crucial equaliser, as they slipped four points behind their opponents in fourth place.
Having fallen to a 2-0 defeat at home to Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, there is a danger that Frankfurt’s season could be derailed should their inconsistent form persist throughout the coming weeks.
The former Frankfurt boss will be motivated to get one over on his former side at the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday, especially as it would keep them firmly in the race for securing a Europa League qualification spot.
