The England Cricket Board has pulled out Chris Woakes from The Hundred 2024 competition due to “management of his Workload” ahead of the test series against Sri Lanka.
The all-rounder Chris Woakes was expected to be available for Birmingham Phoenix’s final two group stage games against Trent Rockets and Manchester Originals, but the Phoenix club announced that he will be “unavailable for the remainder of the competition”.
With many reports stating Chris Woakes has been pulled out of the competition being linked with Ben Stokes’ injury, the ECB has denied the statement.
Earlier on Sunday, Ben Stokes suffered a suspected hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred. Ben Stokes who plays for Northern Superchargers, was forced to retire hurt during the chase of the match against Manchester Originals. He pulled up a sore while attempting a quick single while playing for the side.
He was guided by the people on both sides clutching his left hamstring and was seen moving around with the help of crutches after the game. “It doesn’t look great unfortunately but I think he’ll be getting a scan tomorrow and see how he is,” said Brook.
If Stokes is to be ruled out of the first test against Sri Lanka, Ollie Pope will be leading England on the home ground in the quest of moving forward in the ICC WTC points table.
Under Ben Stokes’ captaincy, England has recently sealed a 3-0 series sweep against West Indies and moved to sixth position in the WTC points table. Following the three tests against Sri Lanka, England will be traveling to Pakistan in October for a three-match test series. The first test match against Sri Lanka will begin on August 21 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
