Former England captain Sir Geoffrey Boycott has been back in the hospital after developing Pneumonia right after his cancer surgery.

The 83-year-old was discharged from the hospital following an operation to remove a malignant tumor from his throat. Days after his surgery and discharge on Friday, July 19, Boycott’s family revealed that things took a turn for the worse after his readmission to the hospital.

An official statement was issued on social media from Boycott’s family that he developed Pneumonia after he was released from his surgery and his condition has taken “a turn for the worse.” The statement added that the legendary battle was unable to eat or drink and would have to use a feeding tube for the “foreseeable future.”

“Thank you all for the well wishes, we’ve been blown away by the sheer number of them! Unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse and my Father has developed pneumonia and is unable to eat or drink so is back in hospital on oxygen and a feeding tube for the foreseeable,” said a statement.

Boycott has contracted pneumonia, a lung infection whose recovery will be challenging for his age. Recently, despite his illness, Geoffrey Boycott has made his critics on England’s test players during the first test of the ongoing West Indies tour of England 2024 for their failure in the ICC tournaments.

Boycott scored 8114 runs in 108 tests from 1964 to 1982 and even captained England on four occasions in 1978 in the absence of Mike Brearley. He scored his 100th first-class hundred against Australia at Headingley in 1977. His scores of 8114 runs came at an average of 47.72, which includes 22 centuries and 42 half-centuries.

He represented Yorkshire in FC cricket, where his runs tally ended at 48,426, and averaged 56.83, with the fifth-highest of all time. He became the president of Yorkshire and was associated with the BCC Test match commentary for 14 years till 2020.

He also had stints with Sky Sports and Talksport radio, other than writing various books on cricket. Boycott had a heart bypass surgery in 2018, due to which he stepped away from commentating in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic.
