England’s White-ball captain Jos Buttler has withdrawn from The Hundred after sustaining a calf injury after missing the first three matches for Manchester Originals.
He took a short break after the T20 World Cup and took an injury while preparing for The Hundred. With initial scan reports anticipating the return of Buttler for the season, his withdrawal from The Hundred was confirmed.
Buttler who has come under scrutiny after failing to defend the World Cup titles in ODI and T20I has been backed by Robert Key. Robert confirmed that Buttler would continue to captain after Matthew Mott was sacked from the head coach position for White-ball cricket and Marcus Trescothick will take over the role on an interim basis for the Australia series.
“Gutted to be missing the Hundred this year,” wrote Buttler on his Instagram. “Best of luck to the Manchester Originals for the rest of the campaign. Working hard to be 100% fit asap [as soon as possible].”
Buttler has suffered calf injuries several times in recent years, including a strain two years back which potentially threatened his participation in T20 World Cup 2022.
Manchester Originals were runners in the last two editions of the men’s Hundred but are winless this year in Buttler’s absence. Phil Salt has been named as captain but managed to score only 23 runs in three innings. They lost four matches in a row and are currently positioned in the bottom of the points table.
The Originals’ coach Simon Katich has initially lined up Keaton Jennings as a replacement, but he has signed for London Spirit. Manchester Originals will play their next match against Oval Invincibles on August 06 at Emirates Old Trafford.
