England White-ball captain Jos Buttler revealed he is willing to leave wicketkeeping if it improves focus on the captaincy. While speaking on the media during the 3rd T20I match against Australia he talked about his decision, and said he would not have kept the wickets.
The England captain was ruled out of the T20I and ODI series against England as he failed to recover from a calf injury before the start. In his absence, Harry Brook was named as the captain for the ODI series. Liam Livingstone has been roped in as Buttler’s replacement in the England squad for the T20I series. Buttler suffered a hamstring injury during The Hundred 2024 and was ruled out of the T20I series.
“If I was playing in this T20 series, I was going to give up the gloves and commit to being at mid-off and seeing how that felt. Baz stumbled across it with injury preventing him from keeping wicket but then he really enjoyed being at mid-off so that’s something we can talk about. If that’s something that will really help me in my captaincy then it’s something that I am open to,” Buttler said on Sky Sports during the 3rd T20I match.”
Buttler’s last international appearance came in T20 World Cup 2024 Semifinals when they lost the match against India.
“I am very open to those kinds of things. I just want what’s best for the team and what’s best for the team is going to be me being the best captain I can be. If I have to move from behind the wickets to do that, then so be it,” he added further.
The third T20I match on September 15 was abandoned due to persistent rain as the T20I series between Australia and England tied 1-1. The third and final match was on September 15, at Old Trafford without a ball being bowled.
Toss was initially delayed as the conditions stayed gloomy, making it difficult for the groundsmen to work a lot on the wet patches on the outfield. England and Australia will play their first ODI match on September 19 at Trent Bridge.
